KUALA LUMPUR: The free-and-easy days of illegal downloading of music and movies may soon be over. A proposed new law will enable Internet Service Providers (ISP) to suspend or terminate the Internet accounts of P2P (peer-to-peer) users.
This new law called the ISP Liability act, will be tabled in Parliament next month, according to Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM) chairman Norman Halim.
RIM has been lobbying the Government for an ISP Liability act for the past 5 years as illegal online downloads have been cannibalising the legitimate sales of music, worldwide.
“The act makes the ISPs responsible for curbing online piracy. The ISPs will be fined if they don’t take action against illegal downloaders. The ISPs have the technology to track P2P users,” said Norman.
However, he said that the fine amount had yet to be determined.
ISPs will send two warning letters to illegal downloaders. Should the downloaders still persist, the Internet access will be suspended or even terminated.
“Other countries that have such an act have seen their respective music industries recover. One good example would be South Korea,” he said.
If this really happens ah I think I'm gonna be really pissed off.... is it destroying the movie industry and the music industry??? I don't think so... they seem to be getting richer by the days and those countries like Africa that don't download, is still poor...
If that fella is complaining about the Malaysian Movie/Music industry not doing well.... well.... cause it's Malaysia??? Honestly if you'd ask me when I visit a music/video shop I would never take a second glace at a malaysian album or movie... even when going to the Cinema it would never dawn upon my mind to think "which local movie should I watch today??"
Not my fault.... you're fault for not making better local music or movies that I can be proud of... yet you make movies that makes me wanna hide my face
Cicakman is a great local example...
Ahh then again.... honestly la, if the chairman can make a statement like that, It must mean that he's earning like mad that's why don't have to do piracy... then again, he might even order his servants to go out and buy DVD somemore... what about normal people like us???
Ahhh don't know la, either way would it really happen?? Or would it be like one of those promises that the politicians promised?? Better public transport, more fair lifestyle, better systems, etc~~~ either way I'm not putting my faith in them... wanna follow South Korea?? At least they have enough money and power to challenge North Korea if they fight them, we barely even have enough firepower to even come close to defeating Singapore -_-"
